
The Hessian troops were initially divided into 2 Divisions. The Fusilier Regiment von Lossberg (Alt) and commanded by then Colonel Friedrich Wilhelm von Lossberg departed from Rinteln, Lower Saxony on 10 March 1776.

The initial contingent of troops consisted of 15 infantry regiments of 5 companies each, four grenadier battalions, on Jäger corps and two batteries of artillery. The Landgrave was related to King George III, having married Mary of Hanover the daughter of George II. On 15 January 1776 Great Britain entered into a Subsidy Agreement with Landgrave Friedrich II of Hesse-Kassel to secure the services of 12,500 soldiers (raising to 17,000 during the course of the War). His son Johann Karl Jeremias von Lossberg married Henriette von Kospoth the daughter of Heinrich Julias Graf von Kospoth (Major General 17 March 1724 – 26 February 1801) with whom Friedrich Wilhelm had served in the American War of Independence. Lossberg was born in Sulbed, Rinteln, Grafshaft of Schaumburg, Lower Saxony on 20 April 1720 and married Dorothea Elisabeth Gmeling.

This amiable Lady accompanied her Husband to Canada in the Year 1776, & during two Campaigns, under went such fatigue & distress as female fortitude was thought incapable of supporting and once She narrowly escaped with life from her Tent which was set on fire in the Night.
